Big Laughs & Sweet Fun: Valentine’s Day Party Games for Elementary Kids

If you’re planning a Valentine’s Day party for elementary-aged kids, games are a must. Children in this age group love friendly competition, teamwork, and activities that let them burn off some energy while still having fun together. Valentine’s Day-themed games add an extra layer of excitement and help keep the celebration organized, engaging, and memorable.

One high-energy game that kids love is a Valentine relay race using oversized stuffed hearts. Divide the children into two teams and give each team a large plush heart or heart-shaped pillow. One at a time, players must race to a finish line with the heart held between their knees. Running quickly isn’t easy, so kids usually end up hopping, stumbling, and laughing their way forward. Once they reach the finish line, they return and pass the heart to the next teammate. The first team to complete the relay wins.

Another popular group activity is the Valentine “gift wrap” game. Using rolls of toilet paper, teams race to wrap one teammate from head to toe—just like wrapping a present. This game works best when children are split into equal teams and timed. Once the wrapping is complete, the winning team can top off their “gift” with a big red bow. It’s a silly, lighthearted game that always brings laughs.

You can also incorporate learning and teamwork with a classic matching game focused on famous pairs. Divide the children into two teams and give each team a buzzer or noise-maker. Call out one half of a well-known pair, and the first team to buzz in with the correct match earns a point. Examples might include Romeo and Juliet, peanut butter and jelly, Cinderella and Prince Charming, eggs and bacon, or cookies and milk. This game encourages quick thinking and friendly competition.

Valentine’s conversation hearts are perfect for a creative stacking challenge. Give each child a handful of candy hearts and set a time limit—about 30 seconds to one minute works well. The goal is to build the tallest free-standing tower possible. If a tower collapses, that player is out for the round. Continue until only two players remain, then let the group cheer them on as they attempt to build the highest and most stable tower. Award a prize to the winning “architect.”

Balloon games are another guaranteed hit. Give each child an uninflated balloon and have them blow it up. Place a large heart target on the floor and have children release their balloons—without tying them—aiming toward the target. The balloon that lands closest wins a prize, while a direct hit earns bonus points or an extra reward. Adjust the distance to match the age and skill level of the group.

For a calmer activity that gives kids a chance to rest, Valentine’s Day Bingo is a great option. Create bingo cards with Valentine-themed images such as hearts, flowers, Cupid, arrows, and candy. Play several rounds so multiple children have a chance to win, and keep prizes small but fun to maintain excitement.

Finally, end the party with a crowd favorite: “Throw the Smile.” Have children sit in a circle while one child starts by smiling as big and silly as possible. Everyone else must remain stone-faced. The smiling child then pretends to wipe the smile off their face and throws it to the next person, who puts on the smile and repeats the process. Anyone who smiles out of turn is out. This game almost always results in uncontrollable laughter and is a perfect way to wrap up the celebration.

With a mix of active games, creative challenges, and quieter group activities, a Valentine’s Day party for elementary kids can be fun, balanced, and full of happy memories.
