Dominique Wilkins: The Human Highlight Film Who Elevated Atlanta

Basketball has seen many stars. Some soared above the rim. Few made it look effortless.
Dominique Wilkins was one of those rare players: part showman, part student of the game, and all heart.

They called him The Human Highlight Film.
His career was filled with dunks that defied gravity, mid-air collisions that left defenders floating in disbelief, and an aura of “what’s next?” that electrified fans every time he touched the ball.

Yet for all the high-flying theatrics, his story is rooted in work, loyalty, legacy—and a commitment to giving back.

From Paris to the Peach State: The Early Journey

Jacques Dominique Wilkins was born on January 12, 1960, in Paris, France, where his father served in the U.S. Air Force. (Wikipedia) His family later moved back to the U.S., settling in Washington, North Carolina, where Dominique’s love of basketball took hold.

By high school he was dominating: scoring, dunking, rebounding, flying above the rim. He then chose University of Georgia, where he refined his game and became one of the most electrifying players in college basketball. He left early and entered the NBA in 1982.

Becoming a Legend in Atlanta

Drafted 3rd overall in the 1982 NBA Draft, Wilkins ended up with the Atlanta Hawks (after being traded from the Utah Jazz) — a move that would define both his career and franchise. (Wikipedia)

His scoring exploded. He averaged over 25 points per game for ten straight seasons and won the 1986 scoring title with 30.3 ppg. His windmill dunks became signature, his demeanor fearless. His nicknames—Nique, Zoid, Human Highlight Film—fit him perfectly.

He also had some of the most memorable dunk-contest showdowns in NBA history, especially his battles with Michael Jordan in 1988.

More Than Just Flash: The Complete Scorer

While the dunks drew the attention, Wilkins’s game was far more complete. He had a great mid-range game, post moves, and could score in myriad ways. He finished his career with 26,668 points and is still one of the all-time leaders. (Wikipedia)

He played 15 seasons (1982-1999), became a nine-time All-Star and seven-time All-NBA selection. He represented what it meant to give both style and substance.

Adversity, Resilience & Return

In 1992 Wilkins suffered a torn Achilles tendon—a career-threatening injury. He returned less than a year later and nearly picked up where he left off, earning NBA Comeback Player of the Year honors. His recovery underscored how much heart he had behind the highlight.

Legacy & Beyond the Court

Wilkins’s number 21 is retired by the Hawks and the University of Georgia. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. He was later named to the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team. (Peachtree Hoops)

Philanthropy, Business & Impact

One of the most vital parts of Wilkins’s story is what he’s done after his playing career. Here are some of his key involvements:

  • He’s been very active in health awareness, particularly with diabetes. After his own diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes, he partnered with organizations and became a diabetes-ambassador in Georgia. (Wellstar Foundation)
  • He works with KultureCity, a nonprofit focused on sensory accessibility and advocacy for invisible disabilities, where he is Chair of the Board. (AAE Speakers)
  • He joined the ownership group of the Birmingham Legion FC (USL Championship) in 2023, expanding his business and sports footprint. (Birmingham Legion FC)
  • Most recently in 2024, he partnered with a real-estate fund called Roots to provide investment and residential opportunities in Atlanta, helping address the wealth gap. (PR Newswire)

Influence for the Next Generations

Wilkins’s style and game still resonate in today’s NBA. His emphasis on athleticism, scoring versatility, and flair paved the way for modern players like Vince Carter, Zach LaVine, and Ja Morant—players who embrace both dunk-skills and scoring prowess.

He also showed that loyalty to one franchise (Atlanta) could build legacy and identity. His business moves show that athletes can pivot into meaningful ventures beyond their playing days.
