According to this tale, Claudius II believed that unmarried men made stronger and more focused soldiers, unburdened by emotional ties to wives and families. To strengthen his military, he outlawed marriage for young men altogether.
A Roman priest named Valentine strongly opposed this decree. He believed deeply in love and marriage and continued to perform wedding ceremonies in secret for couples who wished to be united. When the emperor discovered Valentine’s actions, the priest was arrested and sentenced to death. Valentine was executed on February 14, a date that would later become forever linked with love and devotion.

Another popular legend adds a romantic layer to the story. According to this version, Valentine fell in love while imprisoned—either with the daughter of his jailer or with a woman who visited him during his captivity.
